16. MRI-Most Respectful Interpretation

We know MRIs are used for medical diagnostics to see what might be happening in someone’s body. An MRI can also help us to see what’s really going on in a work setting. Use MRI to look for the “Most Respectful Interpretation.” Start by assuming that no one does the wrong thing for the wrong reason. Generally, the wrong thing happens when someone is trying to do the right thing. We want others to give us that benefit; why would we deny it to others?

A complementary acronym to MRI is API or Assume Positive Intent. Ask yourself, “What are positive reasons this person might have done this?” At a minimum, be curious about a particular action, decision, or behavior and ask why it might have happened. Create a plausible scenario in your mind that includes an MRI and API.

In what ways might I tell a positive story about what just happened?
