Some people think passion is something you can quarry from the soul. But passion has much deeper roots—it’s rooted in obsession. Passion is to obsession as gunpowder is to nuclear fission. Obsession hijacks the brain and drives us. Orville Wright wrote that he was so obsessed with creating an airplane wing that he feared he would go mad. Warren Buffet loves reading 10K’s and financial reports to the point where he has been known to leave a party to go read them. I worked with someone who ran a high-tech business and it was all she could talk about, to the exclusion of anything else.
This is not to suggest you get obsessed, but we all have some level of obsession for something. Think about what your mind works on when it’s not cluttered with other distractions. That will point you in the direction of your own obsessions and ultimately set your fires of passion ablaze.
