What Is A ProBit

Over the past twenty-plus years, I’ve had the privilege of working with tens of thousands of professionals facilitating workshops and meetings on leadership, strategy, and communication topics. There were moments when I was speaking and I would notice someone grab a pen and scribble furiously. I would think to myself; Hey, I said something reasonably intelligent; I may want to remember that for the future. So I would jot it down and tuck it away in my binder.

This led me to compile these ideas for myself. But I admit, I have also borrowed shamelessly from things others have shared. As the old saying goes, “The teacher learns more than the student.” That’s truly the case for me.

Before you assume I am some wise sage who has divined these ideas from some mystical source, I believe many of these are penance for past sins. These ideas are more than likely to have come from mistakes and missed opportunities than from amazing successes or cosmic influences.

My “Why” for Creating ProBits

The first time I compiled these ideas was when my children were launching into their careers. I realized there is so much they need to know that they may not have read in a book, learned in a class, or found in a manual. So, I created a little flip book with many of the ideas you see here.

As I reflected on these, I realized there were so many times in my career when I felt others knew more than I did; that they had some magical answer, and they weren’t telling me. I came to realize that no one has the answer, that we are all just finding ways to “figure it out.” These ideas don’t contain those answers. Instead, I hope that these ideas spur new thinking as you are “figuring it out.”

When I compiled these, I was encouraged to continue sharing them. I appreciate it when people say these ideas got them thinking differently about his or her leadership. So now I’m sharing these with you. Ideas are contagious, I hope a few of these ideas and questions become embedded into your leadership DNA.

In addition to this website, I published this as my third book, ProBits PROfessional tidBITS for Work and Life. If you like these ideas and want to a physical copy, click here to order yours today.
