More Open-Ended = More Potential: This simple equation demonstrates the power of more open-ended questions. The more open-ended the question, the greater potential. For example, if you ask someone “Have you thought about talking to engineering about the problem?” you have limited the potential responses to talking with engineering. Instead, ask “Who else can provide insight into this problem?” Now you have opened up the potential to a broader audience. Instead of just looking to engineering, the person might identify others who have an even better perspective like line staff, maintenance, service personnel, the equipment manufacturer, university students, other users of the equipment and the list goes on. Use your open-ended questions like a can opener to help you and others see more fully.
